Abstract: At the beginning of the 90s, new ideas from physics led to striking formulas for classical questions, if they could be put on a mathematically solid basis.This led to a Fields medal for a physicist (Edward Witten), and set the ball rolling for a veritable avalanche of new ideas and results that shows no sign of slowing down, three decades later.
